Qualities

OVERVIEW

Each Aspect has three Qualities that defines your Character’s capabilities more narrowly:

  • POWER, which determines how forcefully the Character can exert themselves in that Aspect,
  • PRECISION, which determines how accurately the Character can focus their exertions with that Aspect, and
  • PERSISTENCE, which determines how long a Character can exert themselves within that Aspect.

To assign values to your Character’s Qualities, you distribute all of the points in an Aspect Pool amongst that Aspect’s Qualities. The value of a Quality can range anywhere from 0 to the full value of that Quality’s related Aspect.

QUALITY MODIFIERS and CHALLENGES

Quality Modifiers come into play when rolling Challenges, and will give you a bonus or penalty to your Challenge Roll when your Character attempts to do something with an Ability related to that Quality. As a specific example, in a combat situation:

  • Strength (BODY/Power) can add to the amount of damage an attack does,
  • Agility (BODY/Precision) can modify the Character’s attack roll, and
  • Endurance (BODY/Persistence) can help resist an enemy’s attack.

Once you’ve distributed each of your Aspect Pool points between their respective Qualities, you can add the Modifier value as shown in Table D for each Quality to your Character sheet.

TABLE D: QUALITY MODIFIERS

EXAMPLE

Brett’s character, Sneeky Peet, has a BODY Aspect of 9, which he rolled earlier. Now he needs to divide those 9 points into the Body’s aspect’s three qualities: Strength, Agility, and Endurance.

BODY has three Qualities:

  • STRENGTH, indicating Bodily Power,
  • AGILITY, indicating Bodily Precision, and
  • ENDURANCE, indicating Bodily Persistence.

Brett decides that Sneeky Peet isn’t very strong, but he’s very agile, and he doesn’t get winded too easily.

  • He assigns 1 point to Peet’s STRENGTH for a -1 modifier.
  • He then assigns 5 points to his AGILITY for a +1 modifier.
  • Finally, he assigns 3 points to his ENDURANCE for no modifiers.

Brett will repeat this process for Peet’s MIND and SPIRIT Qualities.
