Combat


OVERVIEW

Combat is an orchestrated series of Challenges which occur in chronological order - technically, it’s the most intricate kind of Challenge there is, because it’s a series of Challenges which determine what side of a conflict wins.

The steps you’ll follow in order to work through a Combat Challenge are as follows:

SURPRISE & INITIATIVE

TRIGGER MECHANIC RESULT
Hostile groups meet SURPRISE: any Characters unawares? Unsurprised Characters get 1 Momentum to spend.
Parties respond INITIATIVE: who acts first? Characters select appropriate Ability to Check.
Order of Combat uses Check value, High to Low.

COMBAT ROUNDS

TRIGGER MECHANIC RESULT
New round RECOVERY Characters regain all lost Momentum (usually max 3)
Character’s Turn MOVE during their Turn Character can move full movement spending 1 Momentum
ACT during their Turn Character can choose to Act by spending 1 Momentum
ATTACK an enemy Character can attack an enemy in range by spending 1 Momentum
Other Characters’ Turn REACT to others’ ACTIONS Character can choose to React by spending 1 Momentum
Character Attacked DEFEND self from harm Character can actively or passively Defend themselves.
All Characters Acted Loop back to New round Loop back to New round / RECOVERY
One side defeated Combat Challenge complete Heal, loot, and celebrate!
