Qualities
QUALITIES provide a PLAYER to more narrowly define the capabilities of their CHARACTERS within the BODY, MIND, and SPIRIT ASPECTS. Those narrow capabilities also provide PLAYERS with a way to improve their CHALLENGE and SAVE rolls during gameplay.
Aside from providing a rough guideline as to how capable a CHARACTER, QUALITIES provide MODIFIERS which allow a PLAYER to TWEAK their CHALLENGE or SAVE results after they’ve been rolled. Understanding what they are and how to use them is key to advanced play.
The ASPECTS of BODY, MIND, and SPIRIT each have three QUALITIES, and those qualities each represent the character’s specific ability to exert POWER, PRECISION, and PERSEVERANCE within each ASPECT. Those qualities are defined below, and related to each ASPECT:
| ASPECT | POWER | PRECISION | PERSEVERANCE |
|---|---|---|---|
| REPRESENTS | “How Forcefully” | “How Accurately” | “How Long” |
| BODY | Strength | Agility | Endurance |
| MIND | Knowledge | Wisdom | Devotion |
| SPIRIT | Presence | Intuition | Faith |
To assign values to your Character’s QUALITIES, you distribute all of the points in an ASPECT POOL amongst that ASPECT’s QUALITIES, with the following guidelines:
- The value of a QUALITY can range anywhere from 0 to the full value of its related ASPECT.
- The sum of an ASPECT’s QUALITIES must equal the full value of the ASPECT itself.
The higher the value of a QUALITY, the higher its MODIFIER will be. MODIFIERS are used when resolving CHALLENGES and SAVES, so QUALITIES with higher values are likely to make the CHARACTER more successful when using them.
The value of a QUALITY determines its MODIFIER, and that MODIFIER can be applied to any one die rolled during a CHALLENGE or SAVE. The table below determines how the MODIFIER is determined:
| QUALITY RANGE | ABILITY MODIFIER | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | -2 | Debilitated: difficulty doing even common tasks |
| 1 | -1 | Weak: inconsistent results for everyday tasks |
| 2 - 3 | 0 | Normal: the average individual |
| 4 - 5 | +1 | Competent: above average, professional |
| 6 - 8 | +2 | Gifted: notable ability |
| 9 - 11 | +3 | Strong: a natural talent, consistently effective |
| 12- 15 | +4 | Mighty: powerful talent and natural affinity |
| 16- 19 | +5 | Heroic: regularly capable of impressive feats |
| 20- 24 | +6 | Legendary: only one in a generation is so talented |
| 25- 29 | +7 | Paragon: the apex of natural ability, embodied |
| 30+ | +8 | Supernatural: even the Immortals take notice of your talents |
Brett’s character, Sneeky Peet, has a BODY Aspect of 9, which he rolled earlier. Now he needs to divide those 9 points into the Body’s aspect’s three qualities: Strength, Agility, and Endurance.
BODY has three Qualities:
- STRENGTH, indicating Bodily Power,
- AGILITY, indicating Bodily Precision, and
- ENDURANCE, indicating Bodily Perseverance.
Brett decides that Sneeky Peet isn’t very strong, but he’s very agile, and he doesn’t get winded too easily, so he assigns his 9 BODY Aspect points accordingly:
ASPECT
LEFTQUALITY POINTS
ASSIGNEDMODIFIER 9 STRENGTH 1 -1 8 AGILITY 5 +1 3 ENDURANCE 3 0
Brett will repeat this process for Peet’s MIND and SPIRIT Qualities.
