CHALLENGES
Challenges in the Lens are the resolution mechanic which allows Abilities to be used, combat to be conducted, spells to be cast, and so forth. The mechanic is called a dice pool, and it works in four steps:
- Referee imparts a Target Number, representing difficulty level.
- Player rolls their Ability’s Talent Die and Training Dice, modifying one die roll by their appropriate Quality Modifer.
- Each die whose value is greater than or equal to the Target Number is considered a Success.
- The number of successes determines the Result, as follows in the table below:
| SUCCESSES | RESULT | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|---|
| None | Botch | Complete failure at the challenge and a complication arises. |
| One | Failure OR Success At Cost | Player decides whether failure, or success with a complication, is the result |
| Two | Success | Ability is used successfully as the Player describes. |
| Three | Triumph | Best possible success: max dice results, or use a Special Power without cost. |
The details that follow show in greater detail how the mechanic works, including what Qualities a Character can tap into when they resolve their Character’s Ability use, and how GMs can select both the mechanics and the difficulty level of a Challenge.
