OVERVIEW
RESOLUTION MECHANIC
There are two mechanics - one for the basic system, and one for the advanced system. The Advanced system adds some nuances to the rolls, but both use the same foundational mechanic: dTALENT + 2dTRAINING -> EFFORT
BASIC RESOLUTION
Whenever a Character wants to do something, they roll three dice to determine the outcome. The steps for resolution are:
- Determine which Ability corresponds to the task the Player wants their Character to attempt.
- One TALENT DIE type, from 1d4 to 1d12, is determined by the Character’s Species affinity with the Ability’s Category.
- Two TRAINING DICE, from 2d4 to 2d12, are determined by the Character’s Training Level in the Ability.
- A TARGET NUMBER is set by the GM. This represents the difficulty of the task. TARGET NUMBERS generally range from 2-14.
- The Character’s Player rolls the three dice. Each die which is results in a number equal to or greater than the Target Number is counted as EFFORT.
- The total amount of EFFORT resulting from the roll determines the outcome of the roll:
- ZERO EFFORT: Botch! Character fails to do the task and something else bad happens.
- ONE EFFORT: Sacrifice! Player decides whether character simply fails, or succeeds at a cost. Cost is determined by the game referee.
- TWO EFFORT: Success! Player has done the task with no negative or positive side effects.
- THREE EFFORT: Triumph! Player not only does the task, but does so in either half the time, with double the effect, or another benefit to the player determined by the game referee.
ADVANCED RESOLUTION
Advanced resolution uses the same mechanics as basic, with the following additions:
- Characters with a SUPERNAL TAG from a PERK or QUIRK will use 1d20 for their TALENT roll and then discard the TAG.
- Characters without any training will use 2d2 for training when attempting Abilities they have not learned but can reasonably attempt.
- Some Abilities cannot be attempted if they are not learned, and especially Abilities in the Anima, Gifted, and Source Categories generally cannot be accessed without training.
- Players may choose to modify any one die roll with the MODIFIER of a related QUALITY. For instance, if they’re trying to attack with a sword, they can leverage the QUALITY MODIFIER of their AGILITY (BODY/Precision) QUALITY to ensure a hit. They could also state that they were using their STRENGTH (BODY/Power) to effectively attack through hard armor, for instance. A Player cannot stack this bonus with another bonus on the same die.
- Players may modify another single die roll by the QUALITY LEVEL of the primary tool they’re using to take the action with. A Player cannot stack this bonus with another bonus on the same die.
