Combat
OVERVIEW
Combat is an orchestrated series of Challenges which occur in chronological order - technically, it’s the most intricate kind of Challenge there is, because it’s a series of Challenges which determine what side of a conflict wins.
The basic flow of conflict resolution goes something like this:
| STAGE | PURPOSE | REQUIRES |
|---|---|---|
| SURPRISE | Determine if any characters are surprised | Botched INITIATIVE roll |
| Attacked by HIDDEN character | ||
| Attacked while INCAPACITATED or INSENSATE | ||
| SHOCK | Give unsurprised characters 1 Momentum to spend | One or more SURPRISED characters |
| INITIATIVE | Determine who acts first | Combatants roll the Ability they will use for Initiative |
| ROUNDS | All combatants gain full MOMENTUM | Combatants take TURNS in descending Initiative order. |
| TURNS | Each combatant has a chance to MOVE | 1 MOMENTUM provides full base MOVE rate. |
| Each combatant has a chance to ACT | 1 MOMENTUM provides 1 ACTION. | |
| Each combatant can REACT to others’ ACTIONS | 1 MOMENTUM provides 1 REACTION. | |
| New ROUND begins | All combatants have acted. | |
| END | Combat flow concludes | One or both sides are incapacitated or dead. |
